Selecting The Correct Air Conditioning Compressor



This article discusses two popular types of air conditioning compressors and how to select the correct one for each type.

  • CCI style air conditioning compressors, also known as Tecumseh, Blissfied or York, are called reciprocating, upright or inline style air conditioning compressors.
  • Sanden style air conditioning compressors, also known as Sankyo, Seltec, Diesel KIKI or Zexel, are called rotary types of air conditioning compressors.

Tecumseh/CCI Air Conditioning Compressors: The Basics

The Tecumseh, CCI, Blissfied, York air conditioning compressor pictured here is very common on a wide variety of commercial trucks and other vehicles.

Most of this style air conditioning compressors have an I.D. tag similar to the one pictured here. The middle line on the tag is the part number labeled "PT".

The part number represents particular features of your compressor so please pay special note on how to decipher your part number.

To illustrate how to decipher your part number, we will use ET210L-25150.

  • E = Equipment Grade
  • T = Tube O Style hose connections (R = Rotolock, T = Tube -O-, F = Flange, S = Slim Line)
  • 2 = Number of cylinders
  • 10 = Cubic inch displacement
  • L = Left hand suction (R = Right hand suction)
  • 25150 = Part number (We can use this number to find our part number)

How to Find the Right Replacement CCI compressor

Locate the I.D. tag and enter the entire part number without dashes in our product search box on the top left side of this page. You can also contact our technical customer service team to decode the tag and find your compressor. We have application catalogs containing data on several truck applications by year, make and model. However, we recommend you decode your tag first to be certain before contacting our customer service team.

Please note that some generic compressors may have a label instead of an I.D. tag. This label is typically located on the back of the compressor and can be deciphered in the same way as the I.D. tag.

Sanden air conditioning compressors are also very popular on a wide variety of commercial trucks and other vehicles. With different mounting configurations and other variables associated with these compressors, it is important to reference the compressor's label or our application guides to determine the correct compressor for your specific application.

Using the Sanden Label to Identify a Compressor

Most of this style air conditioning compressors have a tag that contains the following key pieces of information needed to identify the correct compressor for your need.

  • Refrigerant Type
  • Lubricant Type
  • Lubricant Amount
  • Most important to us now is the Model Number which begins with a "U" or other letter.
