Pocket Tech is a tool that allows you to assess the actual brake lining remaining in a fast & cost efficient manner.
How to Measure Brake Lining
With the brakes applied, the tool end is inserted between the lining pads (or through the
inspection slot if equipped with dust shields) with the stepped side towards the shoe table and
the notched side towards the drum.
You simply slide the tool in until it stops and read the number that is marked adjacent to that
step on the tool. This number indicates the amount of brake lining remaining (gauge is labeled
either in 16ths, 32nds, or percentage).
**NOTE** some backing plates do not have the inspection slot lined up with the gap between
the shoes. On those types either backing plate removal is required or a 7/8" hole needs to be
drilled at the gap between the pads the first time.
How to Reference Drum Wear
1. Apply the brakes to the vehicle
2. Insert the narrow end of the Technicians Gauge tool between the lining pads
3. Make sure the relief is towards the drum
4. When the tool is parallel to the drum surface and the relief area is touching the outer
edge of the drum and the tool will indicate the maximum wear on the drum allowed.
